In May I took part to yet another Twitter meme devoted to characters and I enjoyed this one even more than the #StoryWarriors because here I got to speak in my characters’ voice.
I know this is something I could do whenever I want, still I seldom do it. I mean, I don’t normally write in the first person, I find the third person limited POV a lot more inspiring, which may be why even when I work on character building, it never really comes to me to write in my characters’ voice. Still when I’ve done it – as for example in the Characters Speak series – I’ve always enjoyed it.
Bones of the Titans is my least define WIP. I tried to write the first draft during NaNoWriMo a couple of years ago, but failed miserably.
It’s a story set in 1920s Berlin, but it’s very different from The Frozen Maze. Where The Frozen Maze is more about life in the German countryside and what remains the same even in times of change, Bones of the Titan is all about change and not chancily it is set in the most modern city of the time.
Once again, please don’t mind the typos.

Ombretta Vivaldi
#CharactersTell – 1/5
I’m Ombretta Vivaldi, originally from Verona, now living in London, one of the most modern cities in the 1920s. Not my favourite place in the world, but one that may make my dreams come true. Sarah is my author and she’s from Verona too. pic.twitter.com/BFf2wtZjOW— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 9 maggio 2018
#CharactersTell 2/5
I’m the secretary of the office of Picts history at the British Museum. Though I do most of the job. Evenall those snobbish history professors and researchers come to me rather than to Ross. #amwritingfantasy #WIP2018— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 10 maggio 2018
#CharactersTell 3/5
My dream job would be researching and collecting folk stories. That’s what I’ve studied so hard at university for (and don’t think a woman is easily allowed this). But I like the British Museum, it’s a beautiful place of history#amwritingfantasy— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 10 maggio 2018
#CharactersTell 4/5
Being a woman is occupational hazard enough in this this time and place. I know – everybody knows – that I deserve the office, but nobody will give me more than the secretary post. I’m working hard to prove myself. It may still be for nothing#amwritingfantasy— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 10 maggio 2018
#CharactersTell 5/5 All in all, I get along ok with people on my job. They still treat me as a secretary, even when they know fully well I’m doing the manager’s job. Even when they appreciate me for that. Of course, with Ross it is a different matter #amwritingfantasy #WIP2018
— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 14 maggio 2018
#CharactersTell 6/5 I love nature and storytelling. When I happen to have money to spare, I go to the theatre. Alone, if I have to. And I like country walks. Best of all, is listenign to a storyteller in his/her environment. But that’s a rare occurrence
— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 14 maggio 2018
#CharactersTell 7/5 I take a deep breath and get inside the British Museum. I love my job. I love it even if people think it is not my job. One day, I’ll prove it is. I can do it better than Ross, anyone can see it. One day, they’ll have to admit I can do as well as any man.

Reinhart Zimmermann
#CharactersTell 8/5 I’m Reinhart Zimmermann, a Industrialist and patron in Berlin. I come from a wealthy family who’s been in industrial business for a few generations now. I’m also trying to sustain and advance German culture. It’s very important, you know #amwritingfantasy
— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 15 maggio 2018
#CharactersTell 9/5 I’m in the production and dealing of iron and other industrial materials. This was a huge market in the prewar years. My family became even richer that it was. The Great War and the Treaty more so were huge backseat for me, but I’m still doing fine
— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 15 maggio 2018
#CharactersTell 10/5 It’s a good business still, even if the postwar years have seen a heavy limitations from the Treaty of Versailles. Luckily, I’ve found a group of likeminded people who support each other’s business while furthering the nation. There’s a price to pay,of course
— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 15 maggio 2018
#CharactersTell 11/5 Arts. As I’ve mentioned, I’m a patron of many museums in the city of Berlin. I don’t know much about art, actually, but I usually can understand the value of a piece well enough, even the barbarous ones. My house is full of arts #amwritingfantasy #WIP2018
— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 15 maggio 2018
#CharactersTell 12/5 Grocery? Cooking? Are you trying to offend me? Of course I don’t’ do that stuff. I forbid my wife to do it too. There are people who are supposed to go about those things, and we pay them fine. Doing my own grocery! Appalling! #amwritingfantasy #WIP2018
— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 16 maggio 2018
#CharactersTell 13/5 You are doing a lot of stupid questions. Slacking on the job! No good Prussian would do that. That’s stuff for those individuals, those Jews, who are ruining the nation. Don’t ever ask me any other such stupid questions #amwritingfantasy #WIP2018
— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 16 maggio 2018
#CharactersTell 14/5 The worst part of my job is dealing with the insufferable Treaty limitations. They’re doing it to hinder Germany’s rise and I despise the Republic, that agreed to it. Are they even Germans? Jellyspine politicians, I call them #amwritingfantasy #WIP2018
— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 16 maggio 2018

Ross Harding
#CharactersTell 15/5 I’m Ross Harding and I’m Ombretta’s boss at the British Museum. An idea of my father’s to employ me at the museum, we all know I’m the least suitable person for the post. And since even I know, I won’t hinder Ombretta in any way pic.twitter.com/hdCidsDp7f
— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 17 maggio 2018
#CharactersTell 16/5 With my father, you mean. Look,my father is a fine man. He’s a respected archeologist and professor. He wants me to have his same kind of respectable life, but I’m not like him. I love him, and I hope he loves me enough to understand I’m very different from him
— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 17 maggio 2018
#CharactersTell 17/5 Troubled child, that doesn’t even start to describe it. I shouldn’t have been born in an aristocratic family. I’m not a noble man. My father, and more so my mother (God rests her soul) believe I am, but I know myself better than they do #WIP2018
— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 17 maggio 2018
#CharactersTell 18/5 Following the rules. I’ve always had troubles doing. I still do. I have my own set of rules, which people don’t seem to get along with very well. I’m the same with women. I don’t care what’s expected from me, I’ll treat them as I see fit and as they deserve
— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 18 maggio 2018
#CharactersTell 19/5 Goodness, I hope not, for the poor child! Though that’s not my heart, I’d love to have a family and children. But I’m an irresponsible person, you know? I do know. That’s why I don’t want a stable relationship. A women would expect things I can’t give her.
— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 19 maggio 2018
#CharactersTell 20/5 I generally make friends easily, that’s my only quality. I get along well with just about anyone and I suppose this is one reason why they still keep me at the museum. Public relations are getting increasingly important in any form of enterprise #WIP2018
— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 20 maggio 2018
#CharactersTell 21/5 My favourite subject at school? Wouldn’t know. I didn’t spend enough time there to discover whether I had one #amwritingfantasy #WIP2018
— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 21 maggio 2018

Ortensia Vivaldi
#CharactersTell 22/5
I’m Ortensia Vivaldi, Ombretta’s cousine. I was born in a little village on the Dolomites, where I’ve always lived. Ombretta and I couldn’t be more different, she’s travelled the world and went to university. I’m just a village midwife. But we are like siters pic.twitter.com/Zrm22Hijb4— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 22 maggio 2018
#characterstell 23/05
We’re a agriculturas sociaty, still living as our ancestors have lived for many a century. Here everybody knows everybody else, if that may be considered a restriction. You’ll be very careful what you do and say and who you bind yourself to— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 24 maggio 2018
#CharactersTell 24/05
From the outside, we may look subdued. Men cover all the social, political and religious roles. We are supposed to look after the house and the children, but as wives and especially mothers, we have in fact a great, if hidden, power over our community— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 24 maggio 2018
#CharactersTell 25/05
Wouldn’t say I’m a wild card, but I can’t say I conform either. I’m a midwife, you see. In these parts, some people still consider us witches. I mean, really! Sure, we know the human body, soul and mind. We know the spirit world and the old ways. But witches?— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 25 maggio 2018
#CharactersTell 26/05
I live in a very traditional society and I wouldn’t say that offers a lot of equality, if by equality you mean that men and women are allowed to do and aspire to the same things.
My cousine Ombretta lives in a world that sounds more like that.— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 27 maggio 2018
#CharactersTell 27/05
You need money to sustain an addiction, and you won’t find much of either around here. But as in all small communities, blood becomes hot fast for the studibest things. Then even a midwife like me needs to use some – how does Ombretta calls it? – psychology— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 27 maggio 2018
#CharactersTell 28/05
I’m proud to keep the legacy of my ancestors alive. The sacred knowledge of herb healing, the ways of the spirit world, the secret parth of the moon. There are ever fewer people willing to learn. Or who have the gift to understand. I’m doing my little bit— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 30 maggio 2018

#CharactersTell
Ombretta: Ortensia and I live so far away, but it doesn’t matter. She’s my cousine, but most importantly my soul sister. My mum, my father, my step-father… I’ve lost everyone now. But I still have Ortensia, and that’s a great comfort— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 30 maggio 2018
#CharactersTell 29/05
Ortensia: Ombretta lives in such a different world from mine. Lots of people here don’t trust her and judge her very harsly. But I know her very well. She’s such a morder woman, we look so different. But inside – inside we are the same.— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 30 maggio 2018
#CharactersTell 30/05
Ross: Who would win a game of pools between me and Reinhart? Well, that depends what I’d achieved if he wins and what if he loses. Many people think I can’t play pools *grins*— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 30 maggio 2018
#CharactersTell 31/05
Ombretta: He’s a Brit. It may not be his fault, but…
Ross: I have a feeling we would have gone on adventures all the time. Ombretta will never admit it, but we do have a lot in common, the two of us.— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 31 maggio 2018
While a was doing this meme, someone tagged me for another and since I chose to speak about Bones of the Titans too, here it is.

BONES OF THE TITANS
1. Genre: Historical Fantasy with a dieselpunk inclination
2. Release date: it’s still a long way off
3. Actress I’d cast for protagonist: Leonora Hughes (1920s acctress)
4. Tag: @LillianCsernica @LillianCsernica— JazzFeathers (@JazzFeathers) 24 maggio 2018
I’m sorry I didn’t get a chance at spotlighting Wolf (Wolfgang Neumann) who’s a strong supporting character like Ross (and just like him, may become a main character, depending where the story will go), or Alexandre Durand.
But wait, last year I had the opportunity to shocase a passage from my NaNo draft with them.
And so, you’re now caught up with all my WIPs. All of them are in my thoughts, though at the moment I’m activelly working only on The Frozen Maze.
But I’m curious, what’s the one that most stirs your reader’s curiousity?
The Frozen Maze
Bones of the Titans
Ghost Trilogy

Hi Sarah – loved all these snippets … and I’d go with Bones of the Titans … but you can bring the people and story to life … good luck – cheers Hilary
jazzfeathers
Oops! Bones of the Titans is the story least defined in this moment. But I have to admit that after writing my AtoZ Challenge (which I started because I was researching this story) I’m a lot more motivated.
I’m happy to know you like the idea. The story may still be vague, but I do love these characters.
Roland R Clarke
The misconceptions about others are clever touches to your characters – and so true.
jazzfeathers
You know, Roland, I hadn’t realised misconception was a theme. Thanks for pointing it out 🙂
Margot Kinberg
Oh, these are great bits, Sarah! I really like the way your characters are developing. They feel quite real, and that’s fantastic!
jazzfeathers
Thanks, Margot. I haven’t speant nearly as long a time with then than I spent with the characters from Ghost Trilogy, but I’m very attached to them already 🙂
